MBABANE – Former Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) Public Relations Officer (PRO) Vusi Masuku has passed on after being involved in a car accident.

News about death of the senior police officer, who was now the Deputy National Commissioner and Police College Commandant, started making the rounds yesterday afternoon. It was gathered that Masuku died while admitted to the Mbabane Clinic following an accident which occurred on Saturday while he was descending the notorious Mehlwabovu Hill. A very close relative confirmed the news about the demise of the senior police officer. The relative asked his name not to be mentioned, as he was not the rightful person to speak on the matter. The relative then referred this reporter to the late Masuku’s sister, Thobile Masuku.

Emotional

Thobile’s phone rang unanswered. It was gathered at the time that the family had just been informed about the sad news and was still too emotional to speak. Masuku was from the Shiselweni Region as his home is at Benezer area, at Hlatikhulu under Mtsambama Inkhundla. Another senior police officer, who was the late Masuku’s friend, also confirmed the news, though stating that there was nothing much to say since he was still with the family ferrying the late police officer’s body to Dups Funeral Home. At the time of the interview, the police officer stated that they had just left Mbabane Clinic, heading to the mortuary. The senior police officer said he could only make a comment some other time when they had calmed down.
Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati said her office could not confirm nor deny the news. She said such news had to be confirmed by the concerned family.

Meanwhile, former National Commissioner of Police Isaac Magagula said he was still in shock over the death of Masuku, whom he worked with for a very long time. Masuku served as the police PRO during Magagula’s tenure as the national commissioner. Magagula, who is now a senator, described Masuku as a humble, professional and diligent officer. He said the death of Masuku meant a loss to the police organisation and the country at large. He said Masuku was serving the country as a police officer with so much dedication and had helped a lot of people. The senator expressed his shock on how Masuku died in the car accident, as he was one person known for not overspeeding. Meanwhile, tributes poured in for the late senior police officer on social media after the news of his demise circulated in the late afternoon. Most social media users described Masuku as a humble man.
