MBABANE – The body of the liSwati man who died in Zambia has been repatriated into the country and will be laid to rest this coming weekend.

Muzi Austin Dlamini (29) reportedly died in Zambia in early April and his family was told about his demise on April 8, 2022 by the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS). His mother, Welile Dlamini, confirmed the news about the return of his son’s remains yesterday. Welile said the remains of his son were brought back into the country on Saturday night and she was called to view the body at the Dups mortuary yesterday morning. Welile said Austin would be laid to rest on Saturday morning at his home at Maphalaleni.

Government

She appreciated government for the assistance as they did not have the money to ferry Austin’s body all the way from Zambia where he met his death. This publication reported on May 10, 2022 that his (Austin) family was seeking financial assistance to repatriate their loved one’s mortal remains in Zambia. It was reported that Austin escaped from the National Psychiatric Referral Hospital in 2020. This was after he was diagnosed mentally unfit by doctors. His mother told this publication that after escaping from the hospital, Austin would call and inform them about his whereabouts. She said his first stop was at Gobholo, where he called them to pick him up there. She said when the family went to pick him up at Gobholo, they were told by residents that he had left. This was still 2020. The family sought help from the police but nothing came through.

“In February 2021, he called to tell me he was in KwaZulu-Natal. The police had taken him in for safe-keeping and then later to the hospital,” said Welile. Welile then travelled to KZN with the hope to return with his eldest son but was told that Austin had escaped. Attempts to trace him led to Welile discovering that he was in Polokwane hospital, where he escaped and ended up in Zimbabwe.

Hospital

“I went to Polokwane and I was told that he left the hospital. I returned home with hopes that one day my son will come back,” she said. Later that year, Austin made contact with his mother again to inform her that he was in Lusaka (Zambia) and they must come and fetch him. “He said we must pick him up, we tried talking to the Lusaka police but we ended up losing contact because Austin would escape now and again. I took this information to the police in Mbabane and they promised to help,” she said. Dups General Manager Philip De Souza was also contacted for comment, however, he did not answer his phone and had not responded to messages sent to him by the time of compiling this report.
