NKILIJI - Some Nkiliji High School pupils have promoted themselves to the next class without seeing their report cards.

The reason for allowing them to move on to other classes was that the school feared that the pupils would resort to class boycotts. School Committee member Andile Maseko, said there were no textbooks in the school and pupils promoted themselves. “Our children have promoted themselves. Those who were in Form III last year just went ahead to Form IV and the head teacher asked how they did this,” the committee member said. Maseko further explained that pupils would say they simply used the short message service (SMS) and got their results and proceeded to the next class.

Message

Her message to parents was that in Form IV, they were required to buy new textbooks. She said parents should at least visit the school and state their challenges with a commitment to settle the outstanding fees. “Batali, kubi nkosi yam lasikolweni, sitofuna kutsi sitowenta njani. Batali abati kutsi umntfwana uphasile yini noma akaphasanga,” she said. Loosely translated, she meant the situation was dire and they needed solutions. She said parents were not aware if their children had passed or failed. The committee member stated that by the time parents settled their outstanding fees, their children would be turned back to the previous class and this would be painful. She wondered how parents operated and advised them to show up and commit to paying school fees for their children. The consensus was that their report cards would be released so that they would know how they performed.
