MBABANE - “Who is fighting who if you also have your property burnt.”

This was a question posed to PUDEMO Secretary General (SG) Wandile Dludlu by police officers upon arrival at the scene. The cops had been called after Dludlu’s car was set alight by unknown arsonists on Monday night. The police officers, including those from the Scenes of Crime Unit, attended to Dludlu at around noon. They arrived at the scene in two vans and assessed the extent of damage on Dludlu’s vehicle. While inspecting the motor vehicle, the police officers asked Dludlu who was fighting who if progressive leaders’ properties were also set on fire.

“We thought we were the only target, but the arson attacks have extended also to progressive leaders.  Can you tell us the truth, what is really going on here? Since you are here, can you tell us why police officers are a target to arsonists because they are not involved in the ongoing politics? We are only government employees who provide services as and when necessary. We have police officers who were deployed at Ngwenya where there have never been protests actions but they were attacked just for being police officers,” said the officers of the law. In response, Dludlu said he was not sure who the attacks were really directed to but he mentioned that the struggle was aimed at forcing those in authority to listen to the people and do the right thing. He said it was painful to have a few individuals who made decisions which frustrated the people without even giving them a chance to have a say.

“All we want is for those in authority to listen to the people. We believe that once we elect our prime minister, he will do things according to the will of the people,” Dludlu said.  He added that at times, police officers came down hard on protesters who then resorted to violence. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati said her office had not received anything concerning the incident.
