MBABANE – Sipho Shongwe was allegedly not the only one involved in the plot to kill Victor Gamedze.

This is according to Mbuso ‘Ncaza’ Nkosi. In his evidence-in-chief, Nkosi alleged Sandile ‘Dzodzo’ Zikalala/Luthango told him that four other people, who were dangerous, were involved in the plan to murder the businessman and football administrator. The names of the four people mentioned by ‘Dzodzo’ were one Sthofen, Mike, Mamba and Zakes. However, he did not mention any surnames, but only referred to the other as Mamba. Last year, Siphiwe ‘Tata’ Ngubane told the court that while Nkosi and ‘Dzodzo’ had gone out, leaving him alone at the guest house in which they were lodged in Mbabane, four well-built and well-dressed men arrived and told him in which the job had to be done without delay. Ngubane said he was not aware of the identities of the men as he was seeing them for the first time. He also said he did not ask them any questions because he was not sure about their identities since it was possible that they might be police officers. Nkosi submitted that the quartet was allegedly financing Solani’s Shisanyama and they were dangerous.

Killed

‘Dzodzo’ allegedly proceeded to tell Nkosi that he and Ngubane were supposed to be killed after the murder of Gamedze. Nkosi alleged that he had also discovered that he had to be killed as well. Nkosi was narrating how they got away after he had shot Gamedze. The witness said from the crime scene, he and ‘Dzodzo’ drove to a college in Manzini where there was the latter’s girlfriend. He said they left ‘Dzodzo’s car and travelled to Mbabane using public transport. He submitted that before they reached the guest house in Mbabane, they saw Ngubane, whom they had left in Ezulwini, and proceeded to the guest house together.

At the guest house, according to Nkosi, Ngubane asked why he had killed Gamedze and he said he was emotional at the time and would tell him later why he did it. At the guest house, the witness said they collected their belongings and left in the Toyota Yaris towards Lundzi, which was the escape route Shongwe had allegedly prepared with the assistance of police officers and soldiers. They abandoned the car in a forest at Lundzi area and Nkosi said he deliberately left traces of evidence in the vehicle because he wanted to be caught so that he would be able to tell all what happened and why he did it. He said he was afraid to go to the police because they were allegedly in bed with Farouk and company.

According to Nkosi, in the car he left a can from which he drank, an empty packet of cigarettes, a SIM card holder and a till slip from Spar, Ezulwini. He said he had handled these items to ensure that if police officers conducted an investigation, they would know  the responsible person. He also said he did not tell Ngubane and ‘Dzodzo’ about what he was doing. Nkosi further mentioned that he had given his phone numbers to girls he proposed love to as part of giving clues as to who had committed the murder because he allegedly did it against his will.

Getaway

Nkosi told the court that after they abandoned the getaway car, ‘Dzodzo’ said he would walk on one side of the road while the two of them walked on the other side. He said some cars approached and Ngubane grabbed him and they lay on the ground until the cars went past. He said ‘Dzodzo’disappeared for a while and when he finally resurfaced, Ngubane accused him of attempting to kill them. He said from there, they walked in a forest and since it was dark, Ngubane was able to follow the sound of a nearby river to detect the way they should take. Nkosi said he discovered that he had lost his cellphone and while he and ‘Dzodzo’ went back to look for it, Ngubane continued to walk and he did not see him until he returned to South Africa. Nkosi said he and ‘Dzodzo’ went back to Manzini, after boarding a kombi around Sigangeni to Mbabane, to fetch the latter Red VW Polo before they returned to ‘Dzodzo’s house in Mbabane.

Nkosi said he informed one of his friends in South Africa, Ronny, that things were not okay for him in Eswatini and he might die. The witness submitted that he was assisted by his girlfriend who had relatives in Eswatini, who advised him to leave the country through Mahamba Border Gate. He said ‘Dzodzo’ drove him to the border gate and a certain boy showed him an informal crossing point where he would find a soldier and should ask from him to cross to the other side. He said that was how he left the country and got transport at Piet Retief to Johannesburg.
