MAN ASSAULTED FOR E7 000 THEFT, DIES IN POLICE CELL

PIGG’S PEAK – A man, who was allegedly assaulted by a mob after being accused of stealing E7 000, succumbed to his injuries while inside a police cell.

*Jack is alleged to have stolen the money from a woman who is said to be from around Nginamadvolo. He is said to have fled to Mbabane, but a group of men travelled to the capital city to fetch him and brought him back to Pigg’s Peak. After he was fetched, he was allegedly taken to Nginamadvolo, where he was whipped while being asked to pay back the money. Noteworthy, he was assaulted in an open area. A video showing Jack being whipped with what looks like sticks was shared via WhatsApp. In the video, Jack is seen lying on the ground while two men pin him down on the upper part of his body. In the video, Jack is seen being whipped by two other men while others were filming the assault. In the same video, a voice is also heard saying that he should pay back the money. It could not be established how many people were at the place where Jack was being beaten, but the assault is said to have lasted for several minutes.

Injuries

After they were done with beating him, Jack was handed over to Pigg’s Peak police. Jack is said to have succumbed to the injuries while at the Pigg’s Peak Police Station, where he had been detained. Deputy Police Information and Communications Officer Inspector Nosipho Mnguni said the deceased was taken to the hospital on the day he was brought in. She said after he was attended to at the hospital, he was discharged the following day. Mnguni said since he was a suspect, he was taken back to the police cell after being released from hospital so that he could be taken to court in due course. However, at around 6pm on Sunday, while doing a routine check, a police officer discovered that he was unconscious. Mnguni said he was rushed back to the hospital, where he was certified dead on arrival.

According to some of the residents, it was not the first time for Jack to be arrested. He is said to have been recently arrested, but he is said to have been taken to the Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital while handcuffed. While he was still at the hospital, Jack is said to have escaped. However, he was later apprehended by members of the public from Nginamadvolo after he was accused of stealing money.
