MBABANE - A LiSwati mother and her son were shot dead in South Africa and will be laid to rest tomorrow.

The duo was brutally killed about two weeks ago. The mother was once a teacher at Mbabane Central High School. The story was first aired by SABC on Monday last week, in their 5:30pm news bulletin. According to the news bulletin, the unknown gunmen, believed to be four, went into the duo’s home and shot the mother before they slit her throat. They then stabbed the boy several times all over the body. The incident happened on a Thursday night.  Neighbours are said to have only discovered their bodies three days later.

Teacher

The mother, Charity Thando Maseko, was said to be a former teacher at Mbabane Central High School and she lived in South Africa with her son Siphiwo Gift ‘Piwo’ Mkhonta. From the news bulletin on SABC 1, that attracted over 50 000 viewers, it was mentioned that police were still investigating what could be a gang attack on the duo.  A relative to the deceased had shared that they were not comfortable with commenting on the story. The relative said they were not in a good space to speak about what happened, adding that they were still mourning the loss of their loved ones and could be ready to speak about what exactly happened at a later stage.

Meanwhile, South African Police Service (SAPS) Captain Mavela Masondo said they were still investigating the matter and that no arrests had been made yet. He further confirmed knowledge of the matter and that the duo were indeed emaSwati. “We have that case, no one has been arrested as police are still investigating the matter,” he said. This is the second incident that has seen liSwati natives die in South Africa.  Last week, this publication published a story of a liSwati man who allegedly shot himself after gunning down his girlfriend. The couple lived in Soweto Orlando East at the time of the incident.
