MANZINI - Unknown arsonists have struck once again and this time around, the target was a soldier’s house.

The incident took place at KaLuhleko, near Bhunya Police Station, in the wee hours of yesterday. According to impeccable sources, the two-room house of the member of the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) was supposedly petrol-bombed and almost everything inside was reduced to ashes. The value of the damage caused by fire was not readily available when this report was compiled yesterday as the relevant structures were still assessing the destruction in the house. In fact, one of the sources alleged that the military man was at work when the incident happened and he had to ask for permission from his superiors to rush home. The UEDF Public Relations Officer (PRO), Lieutenant Tengetile Khumalo, confirmed the incident.

Matter

She said their position, at the moment, concerning the matter, was that one of their personnel received information to the effect that something terrible had occurred at his homestead. Thereafter, she said he was released to go assess the situation. She said as the defence force, they were still waiting for him to return and furnish them with a detailed report. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati also confirmed the incident. When this publication was compiling the report yesterday afternoon, she said the police were still recording statements and doing other investigations that would assist them in their investigation, which had already started. However, she said no arrest had been made so far.

It is worth noting that since the political unrest started, this is the first time arsonists have targeted army personnel. Most of the arson attacks which took place affected the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) and its officers and none so far had been reported to have affected His Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS) or its personnel.
