MBABANE – Two young men faced the wrath of mob justice after an alleged failed robbery attempt at KaHlobile, in Matsapha yesterday morning.

The young men are lucky to be alive as they were beaten to a pulp and had to be taken to hospital. Armed with bush knives, the suspects attacked a security guard who was on his way to work at around 5am. In an interview with the guard, Sabelo Dlamini, he stated that he came across the two young men and exchanged pleasantries as he passed them. However, he stated that as he continued walking, the men were behind him, one grabbed him by the neck and raised the bush knife which hit him on the shoulder and he managed to overcome him and pressed him on to the ground.

Dlamini said while he was still dealing with the one attacker who was already on the ground, the friend grabbed him as well but he also managed to defeat him and raised the alarm.  However, he said the friend escaped while the other one who was on the ground was left behind. “Community members responded and beat the suspect before calling the police,” he explained.

According to Dlamini, they also realised that this man was carrying a backpack which had stolen items and money. These items, he said were placed on top of him as he lay helplessly on the ground. He said the other suspect was also caught a while later after his friend had been beaten up. A resident also reiterated Dlamini’s statement. According to the resident, they had committed themselves to tackling crime in the area as most people employed at the industrial area in Matsapha were targeted and robbed, including the shops owned by Asian nationals.

He said when the alarm was raised, they immediately responded to it as they were on the alert due to the escalating crime rate in the area. When reached for comment, Chief Police Information and Communications Officer, Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the matter. Vilakati stated that the two were treated and discharged in hospital. Currently, she said they were conducting investigations.
