PIGG’S PEAK – The beautiful façade of the Pigg’s Peak Hotel and Casino is now hiding a damage worth E1.2 million.

The damage was caused by a mysterious fire which started at around 3pm on Saturday. It is not clear what caused the fire or how it started. The fire is said to have started inside the hotel’s storeroom on the third floor. According to the Acting General Manager (GM), Freedom Mdluli, the damage to the hotel was estimated at E1.2 million. He said this also included the structural damage to the hotel. Mdluli said some of the material which was in the storeroom included 19 queen size beds. He said there were also two bunk beds and nine foam mattresses. The GM said the value of this material was estimated at about E200 000.

He said at the moment, a section of the hotel was not being used and this included 14 rooms and some suites. The GM said none of the rooms were burnt, but that they had been flooded due to the hotel’s fire emergency system. Mdluli also said the fire emergency system played a huge role in extinguishing the fire, alongside Eswatini National Fire and Emergency Services (ENFES) personnel. He said had it not been for the inbuilt hotel’s fire system, the damage could have been massive. The GM revealed that as soon as the smoke was detected, the emergency system was activated. It was the same system that also caused the flooding. Mdluli further revealed that the workers were yet to draw out the water from the hotel’s carpet. He also noted that the hotel was still functional as guests could use some of the rooms which were not affected by the water. Hotel staff have mixed views on how the fire started. Some believe it could have been deliberately started while others are of the view that it may have been accidental. Yesterday, firefighters were still at the hotel to determine the cause of the fire and ensure that it had been completely put out. They had not yet determined how the fire started.
