GAMULA – The arson attack at the home of top detective Senior Superintendent Clement Sihlongonyane is believed to be linked to his role in the arrest of two Members of Parliament (MPs) in Hosea’s Mduduzi Bacede Mabuza and Ngwempisi’s Mthandeni Dube.

Sihlongonyane, who is the Head of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) countrywide, claims to have received over 400 audio and WhatsApp messages from different South African numbers after the arrest of the two legislators. The duo was arrested at the end of July on charges of contravening the Suppression of Terrorism Act. Sihlongonyane shared the audios and WhatsApp messages with this publication.

Messages

One of the messages threatened Sihlongonyane that he must be well informed that the worst was still to happen to him and his family following his involvement in the arrest of the two MPs. Asked if he had reported the threats to the police, Sihlongonyane stated that it would be a waste of time doing so as these people were not in the country. When further asked if he had involved his counterparts in South Africa to assist in investigating the source of the messages, Sihlongonyane said he had not and did not intend doing so. “I think you cannot waste time trying to find the people behind the messages. I know the people who are behind what is happening currently in the country. But I would like to state that I am not shaken by this and they are cowards as they are not coming out and confronting me in person, but resort to using social media platforms,” he added.

The top cop’s rondavel was burnt down by a fire which was started by unknown arsonists on Monday at around 9pm. Sihlongonyane said the arsonists crawled through a fence and when the dogs barked at them, they managed to throw the petrol bomb that ignited the thatched rondavel. He said the dogs ran away after the explosion that was sparked by the petrol bomb. Sihlongonyane explained that he was away from home when the incident happened and he had left three of his sons at home in one of the houses. The senior police officer stated that he was told by his sons that they heard dogs barking but when they went out of the house to ascertain what was happening, they did not see anything hence they went back to sleep. He said after a moment, they heard a loud bang from the explosion caused by the petrol bomb thrown into the rondavel.

Sihlongonyane added that his sons called him and the police, who swiftly arrived but found that the arsonists had fled the scene. He said the police managed to call personnel from the Eswatini National Fire and Emergency Services (ENFES); however, they found that the damage was already extensive as the whole thatched roof had collapsed and burnt all the household items. He mentioned that the burnt items were worth about E80 000 and they included a bed, stove, refrigerator, plastic chairs, block molder, filing cabinet, tiles and sink. The senior police officer expressed belief that the burning down of his house was other means used by the people who were calling for political reforms to lure him to join them.
