MBABANE – Eswatini has started to see a decline in COVID-19 cases, but an upward trend in COVID-19-related deaths.

Deputy Director of Clinical Services in the Ministry of Health Dr Velephi Okello said the decline was noted from the past week and the cases were continuing to show a downward trend. According to the daily COVID-19 statistics, the peak of the third wave was experienced when the country recorded 1 068 COVID-19 cases on August 4, 2021. Dr Okello explained that from the experience of the first and second waves, they were expecting the third wave to take about 6-7 weeks from the first time it started picking up. She said the third wave started to show from the week of June 5 and the country had now passed the peak.

However, she explained that if there could be any disturbance in terms of human behaviour, the country could see a hike in cases. She explained that the human behaviour included increased movement of people, too much gatherings, among others.
“For now, we can safely say we are on the decline in the number of new COVID-19 cases,” she said. Okello also said the hike in deaths was that fatalities were always behind the cases.

Peak

She said the deaths often started to peak after the cases had started to slow down. “We were expecting the deaths to indicate a peak now because the cases only hit the peak over the past two weeks,” said Dr Okello. She explained that the country could expect increasing numbers of deaths over the next few days but the following week, the numbers would decline.
