PIGG’S PEAK – As the dust settles, vandalised and looted shops are being renovated.

In some of the affected shops, broken doors and window panes have been replaced. According to some shop owners in Pigg’s Peak, the renovation was long overdue. Yesterday, some of the shops which had been repaired included Lewis Furnitures. The downside was that there was no furniture for sale. One of the managers was busy at work while some staff members were also seen moving in and out of the shop despite that there was no furniture inside. Another furniture shop that was vandalised and set on fire belonged to a Pakistani national. The shop owner said maintenance was expected to begin to restore the shop so that it would continue operating.

Removed

Yesterday, workmen were also found at a cellular phone shop, which was also looted. The shop, known as Pigg’s Peak Cellular and Sound, was looted during daytime when looters removed the grill gate and took some items. This was despite the presence of police officers and soldiers at one end of the road. Order was quickly restored when soldiers arrived. The shop owner said it took him over 10 years to build his business, yet it was destroyed within a few seconds. However, he also said he had no option, but to renovate the shop so that business could continue. PeP Stores was also looted and some windows broken. The shop was not set alight, but looters made off with several items. Some employees were found cleaning outside the shop in readiness for business. The shop has not opened yet for the public as there is no stock to sell. Other establishments that were destroyed included Taste of Taste Butchery, which services mainly people at the bus rank. The building that houses the butchery was completely destroyed after being burnt such that renovating it may take some time. Though most of the businesses were operational, some members of the public wondered how long this would last.

Security

A businessman who owns one of the shops asked whether the security would be able to contain any more violence, especially because there were concerns that some South Africans had indicated that they would participate in the future. At Buy Cash Hardware, some of the material was being delivered outside the shop, but it could not be established from the manager whether those were items that had previously been looted or new stock.
