MBABANE – Devastation!

The ongoing protests have led to the loss of jobs and destruction to property. The effects of the protests that resulted in the raze of Bandag Tyres located in the Mbabane Industrial Site have cost about 100 employee their jobs. On Tuesday night, Bandag Tyres went up in flames. Personnel from the Eswatini National Fire and Emergency Services could not come through despite being called to come and assist. The double-storey building which costs approximately E15 million was razed to ashes and some of the building’s walls collapsed as it was set ablaze by people who invaded businesses on that night. During a visit to the premises, the building was found to be in ashes, three days after it was set alight.

Looting

People were seen collecting a few of the tyres that remained after the looting and burning. One of the employees who were found on the premises said she still could not understand what happened and why. “Every document has been destroyed, there is nothing. “Even the police have got a lot on their hands now,” she said. In an interview with Mr McGinn, the company’s owner, he shared that the damage to the property was about E15 million.
He said his employees were about 100. McGinn said it was unfortunate that his insurance company would not compensate him for the damage as one of the clauses stipulated that the cover did not pay for damages which resulted from protests. The distraught businessman was eventually seen held by two relatives who assisted him to board a car driven by a relative and they drove off.
