NHLANGANGO – After the mayhem that took place countrywide, the town has not been spared.

All the major shops in the town centre have been looted by people who started off as pro-democracy activists.  Only one shop, Pick n Pay Supermarket was functional as of yesterday. It opened at 9am and closed at 3pm. The looting and vandalising of property started on Tuesday morning. The protesters came from all routes entering town and the police officers had a tough time controlling them, such that they ran out of tear gas and were forced to use live rounds of ammunition. Various complexes which house Boxer Supermarket, OBC Butchery as well as shops such as Mr Price, Sleep Masters, Galito’s were first looted and some of them later torched.

Within the same complex that houses EEC offices, they stole car batteries from a shop and beds and refrigerators belonging to Sleep Masters shop.
The beds were sold on the street for E300 and the refrigerators for E500. Shops owned by businesspeople of Asian descent were also targeted by the looters. About seven shops owned by Asian nationals were looted, most of which were electronic shops. Nhlangano Library was also not spared from the fire, same with Shiselweni Health Offices.
