MBABANE – The Coordinating Assembly of Non-Governmental Organisations (CANGO) says government is causing suffering to the present and future generations with the newly-obtained loan from the Government of India.

Executive Director Emmanuel Ndlangamandla condemned government for going ahead with plans to build a new Parliament building. In his statement, Ndlangamandla said in the midst of a crisis, government continued to cause suffering not only to the present but future generations. He said government chose to prioritise something that was not urgent. Ndlangamandla, said an important question to be posed is ‘what is urgent about a Parliament building?’ while the country was experiencing an economic crisis worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. “Furthermore, government service delivery is at its lowest such that the shortage of fuel has grounded much needed services which save lives. Also, ambulances, police services, quality of healthcare and more are affected,” the director said.

He added that there were other projects that had drained taxpayers’ money such as the International Convention Centre and the Sicunusa road. To date, there has been no accountability as to why the project costs ballooned so much.

Worse

The director added that the situation for Eswatini citizens was getting worse, hence some emaSwati were questioning the system of governance. “It can be assumed that  any political system that does not properly listen to the plight of its people, is not a good steward on taxpayers’ money,  fails to deliver adequate services, risks being rejected in its entirety by the people,” said Ndlangamandla. He added that it was also noted that the Lutsango leader was quoted as saying this was the best political system in the world. However, it was not clear what benchmark was utilised for this comparison, considering how the system was failing to deliver and listen to the plight of emaSwati. Furthermore, he noted that such decisions painted a picture of a government that was removed from reality.
