HLATIKHULU – The youth of kuMethula had one burning question for their MP, was he still their representative in Parliament?

KuMethula Inkhundla youth yesterday served their Member of Parliament Derrick Masuku with a list of demands. The youth, who alleged that their MP was one of the silent legislators in Parliament, delivered their demands outside the KuMethula Inkhundla temporary structure. Armed police officers from Nhlangano and Hlatikhulu had formed a wall to prevent the youth from marching towards the inkhundla centre gate. To find out if they were addressing the relevant person, the youth started by asking Masuku if he was still their representative in Parliament. They stated that they were asking because, as they were seeing him yesterday, they had last seen him when he was campaigning for election in 2018.

It was noted that their petition was handwritten and they said the reason was because they could not afford E2 to type and print their demands. They stated that both Masuku and Indvuna Yenkhundla Vusumuzi Zondo needed to respond to some of the demands as they touched on promises they made. The youth stated that they had bad roads, shortage of water and were not happy with their level of education. They accused Zondo of using a government grader to clear the road leading to his home after he bought a new car and never cared about the rest of the community. They alleged that Masuku promised them clean water when campaigning back in 2018 but to date, they were still without it. Some stated that they even attempted to fetch water from the mountains and asked Masuku to buy them bread, which they alleged was something he (Masuku) was used to giving them, but on the day, Masuku did not buy them any bread.

When Masuku tried to respond, the mob interrupted him by singing while others told him to listen to them. In the attempt he made to speak, Masuku told the youth that they were not attending chiefdom meetings where they would get updates on the things they were talking about. This did not go down well with the youth, which started swearing at him. The police advised him to listen to them.
