LOBAMBA – Members of Parliament (MPs) have been called to an urgent sitting this morning.

This was announced by the office of the Speaker, Petros Mavimbela, who issued the Order Paper yesterday. Top of the Order Paper is a statement to be made by the Acting Prime Minister, Themba Masuku, who is expected to make  a ministerial statement. Although the contents of the acting PM’s statement are unknown, speculation among MPs who were in Parliament for other business yesterday was to the effect that the acting PM wanted to address the ongoing issue of #JusticeforThabani. Some of the MPs said they would not be able to attend the sitting as it fell on a Tuesday, which was a day reserved strictly for meetings at their constituencies.

Conference

“Why is the acting PM now needing us in order for him to address the House, why isn’t he calling a press conference like he normally does ?” asked one of the MPs. The House of Assembly has not been sitting for about three weeks as the Speaker adjourned the House sine die. Mavimbela said this was to give way to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) sittings, which are ongoing. He further dismissed reports that the House sittings had been suspended as there were allegedly motions which some MPs wanted to be moved, which the Speaker was avoiding. Meanwhile, also on the Order Paper is the tabling of regulations of the Water Tarrif Increase Regulations, 2021 and the Construction Industry Council Regulations, 2021 by the minister of Natural Resources and Energy and minister of Public Works and Transport respectively. It was further reported that Senate would also be sitting this afternoon where Masuku is also expected to present the same ministerial statement.

On a similar note, Chaiperson of the PAC Phila Buthelezi yesterday revealed that as MPs they were being threatened by unknown people. He said they were receiving international calls from South Africa and Zambia asking them about the Thabani Nkomonye issue. He said the PAC members must switch off their phones because they would be distracted by the messages coming from some of their constituents who were mostly asking them why they were not being vocal on the #JusticeforThabani issue.

Phones

“I ask  that you switch off the phones because you will be tempted to respond to the messages which the people are sending,” said the Matsanjeni North MP.
