MBABANE – A police officer has been arrested along with a resident of South Africa in connection with illegal possession of dagga.

Shiela Dlamini (35) of Mbekelweni and Nkhosinathi Themba Zungu (39) of Johannesburg, South Africa, were arrested while allegedly crossing to the Republic of South Africa from Eswatini with dagga weighing 306kg.
It is alleged that the dagga was transported in a grey Toyota Hilux registered HR 72S XGP. Information gathered was to the effect that the duo was driving in the same motor vehicle when police officers deployed at the border gate made the discovery.  It is alleged that Zungu drove off when the officers of the law ordered him to stop with an intent to search the car. His failure to stop the car is said to have resulted in one of the police officers pulling out a gun. However, it is alleged that Dlamini jumped out of the car and took to her heels and proceeded to the South Africa side of the border gate, leaving Zungu in the motor vehicle. It could not be ascertained how she was eventually arrested.

It is also alleged that Dlamini tried in vain to influence Detective Constable Mcolisi Thole not to search the car driven by Zungu. The allegations whose veracity is yet to be tested in court are contained in a statement of agreed facts tendered by Zungu, who pleaded guilty to two of the three counts he was facing along with Dlamini. Dlamini was charged with two more counts, resulting in her facing five counts, while her co-accused featured in three charges. In the first count, the duo was accused of illegal possession of dagga weighing 306kg while driving in a Toyota Hilux registered HR72SXGP. They were charged for allegedly conveying the illegal herb without a valid permit to do so. In the third count, the duo was accused of dealing in the drug.

In the fourth count, the police officer was charged for contravening Section 41 (1) (b) as read with Subsection (2) (a) (1) and (ii, (c) and (d) together with Section 35 (1) of the Prevention of Corruption Act of 2006.
It is alleged that upon or about May 6, 2021, at or near Ngwenya Border Gate, Dlamini unlawfully accepted and or agreed or offered to accept an advantage from 6615 Detective Constable Thole an amount of E3 000 for her benefit through illegal, dishonest and biased manner and violation of legal duty in ensuring that the motor vehicle driven by Zungu carrying and transporting dagga was not searched by the police officers at the border gate.
