SITEKI – Another day, another road traffic accident.

Eight pupils from Siteki Nazarene primary and high schools cheated death yesterday morning when a Siyaya kombi they were travelling in overturned while ferrying them to their respective schools. The accident happened just around 7am along the Lukhula-Siteki Public Road near the Buckwood Guest House junction. Eyewitnesses claimed the driver of the kombi was disturbed by an oncoming vehicle. The accident happened just 100 metres away from the Siteki Fire and Emergency Station. “He was disturbed by an oncoming car yet he was speeding and rushing the children to their respective schools from the Lukhula direction. He lost control of the vehicle and it veered off the road and it landed on its side. The swift arrival of fire officers saved the day as they managed to retrieve most of the pupils and rushed them to the Good Shepherd Hospital,” said the witness, who declined to give her identity.

Injuries

Siteki Nazarene Primary Head teacher Winile Mvila said she heard about the accident but she was yet to ascertain the number of pupils who had sustained injuries. “I haven’t received a full report about the accident and I am yet to be informed about it as I gathered that those who were taken to hospital were treated and discharged,” she said. Her counterpart at the high school, Bonginkosi Dlamini, said he gathered that seven of his pupils were involved in the accident and one of them from the primary school. Dlamini said four of his pupils were treated and discharged on the same day. “The other three managed to attend class as they were fine and only appeared traumatised. I established that one pupil from the primary school sustained serious injuries in the upper body. We hope the pupils will undergo counselling as they are still traumatised by the accident,” he said.
Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the accident. She said the pupils were treated and discharged due to the fact that they had sustained minor injuries.

“We got a report about the accident but we were told the pupils were treated and discharged because they had sustained minor injuries,” she said. Last month, on the same spot, a man lost his life when he was knocked down by a car while trying to cross the road to the other side. Mzilikazi residents have appealed to government to erect speed-humps to control speeding cars using this almost complete road, which is under construction by A.G Thomas Construction Company.
