MBABANE – The Royal Eswatini Police Service officers  (REPS) were part of the newly-named Zulu King Misuzulu KaZwelithini’s security detail.

This is according to Acting Ludzidzini Governor Chief Lusendvo Fakudze, who said the country’s police officers offered protection to the newly-named Zulu King before his mother, Queen Mantfombi Dlamini-Zulu, was laid to rest. However, Fakudze could not ascertain when the police were deployed to be part of the  King’s security detail. “Now that Prince Misuzulu has been named King of the Zulu nation, he is the responsibility of the South African Government. We have gathered that he was left under the care of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the South African Police Service (SAPS),” said Fakudze. The acting governor said the Eswatini police officers should be making their way back to the kingdom as their job of protecting Prince Misuzulu was now done.

When asked about the number of police who were deployed to watch over the heir-apparent Prince Misuzulu, he said he could not give the exact number. Prince Misuzulu’s life was believed to be in danger as his succession as King of the Zulu Nation was being opposed. There was commotion and chaos at the KwaKhangelamankengane Royal Palace in KwaNongoma last Friday night, when the late Queen Mantfombi Dlamini-Zulu’s will was read.  The late queen named his eldest son, Prince Misuzulu as the preferred successor to the throne. Queen Mantfombi is the daughter of King Sobhuza II and sister to His Majesty King Mswati III. Eswatini is Prince Misuzulu’s maternal home.

In a video which was trending on Twitter, REPS officers are seen roaming the Zulu Royal Palace and the cars are in the parking lot. Also spotted in the video is Prince Guduza and the royal entourage which he led to South Africa to send-off the late Queen Mntfombi. According to our sister publication the Times SUNDAY, Prince Misuzulu had reportedly moved to Eswatini to ensure his safety. The Times SUNDAY reported that soon after the demise of Queen Mantfombi, Prince Misuzulu was brought to Eswatini for his own safety. “He is said to have left for the burial of his mother,” reported the Times SUNDAY. In the meantime, Prince Misuzulu’s safety concerns are still an issue, especially after reports in the South African media of the alleged withdrawal of VIP protection by the SAPS. VIP is the acronym for very important person. However, South African publication, the Sunday Times, came out to say the SAPS denied withdrawing protection services for the new Zulu King. “The office of police minister Bheki Cele has moved to quash claims that all SAPS officials who had previously been deployed to the Zulu Royal Palace had been withdrawn.
