MBABANE – Gruesome!

This best describes the scene following an accident that claimed the life of seven passengers who were on board a kombi servicing Mbabane/Gobholo yesterday. The accident, believed to have been caused by faulty brakes of the kombi, left the community of Gobholo reeling from shock as they had to retrieve some of the bodies in the river where the kombi had plunged into. The kombi was said to be fully loaded with 16 passengers, including the driver, who lost control of the vehicle, which then plunged into the river. Four women and three men are believed to have died on the spot though their demise was confirmed by a medical practitioner at the Mbabane Government Hospital where they were ferried to after the accident.

The remaining nine passengers were also rushed to the same hospital where they were admitted for medical attention.  When this reporter arrived at the scene, some of the community members were found assisting some of the passengers who were lucky to survive the accident. Those who lost their lives, including the driver, were trapped underneath the kombi as it had overturned several times before plunging into the river. Members of the Royal Eswatini Police Service, Eswatini National Fire and Emergency Services personnel and the community had a hard time trying to rescue some of the passengers as they also had to get inside the river as some of the passengers had been ejected from the kombi. Some had severely fractured limbs.

Paramedics also arrived at the scene, but could not attend to the survivors due to the extent of their injuries. The officers had to try and pull the kombi out of the water to retrieve the corpses of those who were trapped underneath. Some of the community members were shocked to notice their relatives who were also removed from the wreckage. A woman screamed at the top of her voice when a minor, estimated to be around 12 years old, who was from school, was taken out of the wreckage. It was established that the woman was his mother. At the time, she could not entertain questions from this reporter. The minor miraculously survived though he seemed severely injured.
