MBABANE – About eleven construction workers cheated death when the vehicle they were travelling in, a Corsa Utility van, overturned after its driver lost control and it veered off the road, landing in one of the homesteads near the highway at Manzana.

The accident happened after the traffic circle along the Manzana Bypass Road at around 7am yesterday. Residents living along the roadside were awoken by a loud bang and screams of people shouting for help. In an interview with one of the passengers on board the vehicle, he said there was another vehicle in front of them which the driver was trying to avoid. However, he said he was not sure what might have disturbed the driver. The occupants of the homestead said the accident was the forth in a space of three months. The first accident, which was also horrific, happened in November when a car, a Toyota Legend 45, veered off the road and landed in the same homestead. The occupants said they had been reporting to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, however, there had been no assistance.

They pleaded that, for now, the ministry should at least provide temporary barriers to protect the residents whose lives were in great danger. “We believe that the ministry is waiting to act after a life is lost,” said the house occupants. When reached for comment, Chief Roads Engineer in the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Vincent Dlamini, acknowledged to have received reports from the affected residents. Dlamini said they were trying to address the matter, but the response was slow as government did not have the required material. Currently, he said the barriers they had were not sufficient. The chief roads engineer urged motorists to observe road signs, especially the sharp corner after the traffic circle. He stated that the road had been in existence for over a decade now, adding that there were no reported accidents until recently, which was troubling. Deputy Police Information and Communication Officer Inspector Nosipho Mguni confirmed the accident. Mnguni said they were still investigating its cause.
