MBABANE – The effects of the heavy rains experienced in the country have resulted in landslides which have left some of the country’s roads dangerous to travel on.

As a result, the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) has advised motorists to exercise caution when driving along the affected roads. The most recent landslide occurred along the MR3 Road at Makholokholo near Maduma, where rocks which were used to retain the hill fell off and some parts fell onto the road. As a result, motorists had to navigate cautiously when driving through this road. The pictures of the landslide were fast circulating on social media, in particular because this is the exact spot where a huge rock rolled onto the road some years ago.
The rock was blasted and the retainers were placed on the hill.

Another landslide occurred along LaMgabhi/Etiyeni Road as a result of the heavy downpour received since Friday. Tapes were placed to warn motorists of the landslide.
Deputy Police Information and Communications Officer Inspector Nosipho Mnguni warned drivers about the landslides. “Motorists using MR3 public road along Makholokholo are notified that a section of the road has been closed near Maduma due to a landslide. Cones have been placed on the scene to warn motorists,” she warned. She highlighted that motorists who were affected were those using the lanes towards Mbabane lanes, but they were able to share one lane. Mnguni appealed to motorists to drive safely, especially during the rainy weather.
She added that the T-junction leading to Ebuka was also marked to caution drivers on the eroded road.
