MBABANE - What seemed to have started off as a social media joke has turned into reality.

The month of January saw the formal establishment of the Stingy Men Association Eswatini (SMAE), an initiative which aims at encouraging men to spend their money on family and helping the needy, instead of spending it on women who seek luxurious lifestyle from men.

The humorous initiative started being popular as an idea on social media, mainly on Facebook, late December.

Last year, a similar humorous campaign was launched on social media to coincide with Valetine’s Day.

However, this time around, some men took the initiative seriously and formed the now registered association.

Currently, the association has over 500 members, who are led by a president and secretary general.

Projects

They have had conferences where they were laying out their mandate and currently have humanitarian projects and their last one was last Saturday, where they donated food parcels parcels at one of the care points in Manzini.

According to Stingy Men Association  of Eswatini President Carter Musuma, the association became fully functional early January.

“It is funny how the association started. Two men were laughing about the Stingy Men Association in Zambia, Nigeria and South Africa. This then propelled the duo to establish a branch in Eswatini. “What captured us is that we are now living in a world where anything captures the eye and a lot of people are fond of entertainment, especially memes as a form of laughter. We saw the memes and people have a different meaning of the word stingy.

“We liked the fact that the word stingy gets a lot of attention and it has made great jokes. We also noticed that the concept gained a lot of attention so we decided to twist the concept and give it gravity and meaning,” said Musuma.
