MBABANE – Bishop Stephen Masilela is no more.

Masilela succumbed to a COVID-19- related illness yesterday evening. This was confirmed by his wife.

Masilela’s wife, with a heavy sigh during a telephone interview, confirmed the sad news.

The bishop’s brother, former Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, who is now Under Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Anthony Masilela, was also called and he expressed shock. However, he noted that he had not heard the news yet, but said the Conference of Churches Chief Executive Officer Themba Ngozo may confirm the matter. Ngozo’s mobile phone rang unanswered.

Council of Swaziland Churches Secretary General Reverend Zwanini Shabalala said the news was devastating. He said when they heard that the bishop had been admitted to hospital, they carried him and his family in prayer. He said following what had happened, there was nothing much they could say, but to express grief to his family and the Conference of Churches.

According to Shabalala, they had worked with Masilela for quite some time, especially when the three Christian organisations, League of Churches, Conference of Churches and Council met. Shabalala said last month, they met as the three religious bodies to discuss a way forward on the effects of COVID-19 and how it could be prevented.

He said the death of Masilela was a huge blow to the Christian fraternity in the country. He sent his condolences to Masilela’s church; the Church of God locally and in Africa as he was leading it.
