MBABANE – The next four weeks have been declared as crucial in relation with the second wave of COVID-19.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said COVID-19 peaks would be witnessed in December and in January, mainly due to the activities of the festive season.

Dr John Nkengasong, the Director of Africa CDC said the trends were already showing that cases were increasing as the continent was recording between 10 000 and 12 000 new cases per day.

The continent has 55 member States with a total population of 1.2 billion.

“The next two months are crucial because of the peak of the festive season. This is coming at a time when some countries have not even gone through the first wave. We do congratulate those countries that have seen a steady decrease in cases,” he said.

He pointed out that countries with large populations like Nigeria, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo also did very well in handling the pandemic.

Dr Nkengasong said in the past week, there was an increase of new cases in all the continent’s geographic regions.

Increase

“Testing has also increased to 22 million tests, which is an increase by 2.2 per cent from the previous week. As of to date (Thursday) Africa has recorded 92 000 new cases with 2 000 new deaths in one week.”

He said the countries that have done the most tests are South Africa, Ethiopia, Egypt, Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, Nigeria and Cameroon among others.
