MBABANE – Due to alleged abuse at the hands of her husband Mzuthini Ntshangase, Nothando, says her perception towards men changed and she had sexual relations with women.

This is contained in a socio-economic report presented to the court by the Department of Social Welfare in the custody dispute between Nothando and her husband, member of Liqoqo and former Commissioner General of His Majesty’s Correctional Services Mzuthini.

Nothando is employed by His Majesty’s Correctional Services where she holds the rank of Senior Superintendent and is a former Indvuna yembali.

According to the 42- page report, the social worker stated that assessment revealed that her (Nothando) experience in the marriage affected her psychologically, emotionally and physically.

She reportedly informed the social worker that after she moved out and separated from Mzuthini, she got involved in love relationships with women because she felt like she was not aware of herself anymore.

Nothando is said to have further disclosed that she suffered depression and she had to start psychological therapy.

Better

She, however, allegedly mentioned that currently, she was stronger and better compared to when the challenges first started. Nothando is also said to have highlighted to the social worker that she was currently in a romantic relationship with a man and she was happy.

She revealed that while she was pregnant, her husband allegedly once assaulted her to a point that she was hospitalised.

Nothando purportedly stated that she never reported Mzuthini for the assault because she thought she had to protect her dignity.

She alleged that in 2015, Mzuthini assaulted her again and she was hospitalised.

Nothando narrated that life continued to be difficult for her as she was no longer sleeping in the same bedroom with Mzuthini. She told the social worker that she had to share a bedroom with their children.

These are allegations contained in a socio-economic report whose veracity is still to be tested in court.

She asserted that in 2017, while working at Mawelawela women’s prison, she would commute between Mbabane and Mawelawela and for her that was an attempt to make her marriage work.

However, according to her, nothing changed and in 2018, she decided to end their marriage and she no longer wanted to be with her husband.

It is alleged that after taking the decision, Nothando stated that she went to stay at Mawelawela full-time and she also decided to leave the children with their father in Mbabane.

Harrassment

As per the socio-economic report, information gathered revealed that when Nothando was staying at Mawelawela, the maids who were working in Mbabane, where her husband and children were staying, allegedly started complaining of sexual harassment reportedly perpetrated to them by Mzuthini.

Meanwhile, in the report, Mzuthini was said to have informed the social worker that he married Nothando through Swazi Law and Custom on March 5, 2011 at Mkhwakhweni.

According to him, he respected the fact that Nothando held a leadership role in the country and he paid lobola of 32 cattle.

He alleged that after her maternity leave, Nothando was either staying at her workplace or out with friends. Nothando, according to her husband, allegedly did not spend enough time at home with him and their children.

Nappies

Mzuthini revealed that he had to learn how to take care of an infant, from changing disposable nappies to taking the minor to the clinic for immunisation. He further alleged that even when they had a second child, his wife continued to live a separate life from them.

Mzuthini disclosed that because Nothando was allegedly not playing her role to his satisfaction, he felt a need for another wife.

He also revealed that he then married another wife by the name of Nokwazi Mkhwanazi of Madlengempisi in May 2020 and was currently living with her and their children who are twins.

According to Mzuthini, his wife deserted their common home (Queens Gate) since the year 2016.

He submitted that while they were staying together, his wife always refused to cook for the children, but would always prefer to provide them with take-aways from fast food outlets.

Mzuthini alleged that the children were being exposed to unsafe or unfavourable conditions which would affect them psychological.

“The application has been necessitated by a number of recent developments, most especially in Nothando’s circumstances and attitude, which had a direct negative bearing on the best interest of our children,” submitted Mzuthini.
