3 SHOPLIFTERS NABBED WITH E1 900 GOODS

PIGG’S PEAK – “As the festive season approaches, criminals mean business.”

This was said by businessman Shafi Ali, who owns a supermarket where three women stole goods valued at E1 900. 

The women who posed as shoppers entered the supermarket separately. 

Ali said the women were intercepted after he noticed that their backs were bulging in a funny way. “After they were searched, we discovered that they had stolen items,” he said.  He said it was not the first time his shop was targeted. 

He said this had become a norm during the festive season. Ali said women particularly posed as innocent shoppers. “They wear clothes specially designed for stealing,” said Ali.

In one of the videos captured by CCTV cameras at the shop, a woman’s voice asks the shoplifters to mention where they were from. 

One of them responds “Schoeman”, referring to a place in South Africa (SA). However, the women said they were not travelling together. 

They were later taken to the Pigg’s Peak Police Station where they were handed over to the police. Ali said he was advised to be at the Pigg’s peak Magistrates court today where the women were expected to appear.

Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati was contacted for comment on the matter, but she had not yet responded at the time of compiling this report. 

Noteworthy, Ali was one of the business owners who attended a crime prevention exercise organised by police officers. Business owners were sensitised on how to prevent shoplifting. 

During the event, police officer Sergeant Zwelithini Nkomonye advised business owners to be alert. Nkomonye said criminals targeted specific times of the day when they noticed that the shop was very busy.
