NGONINI – Finally, the chicken which had a sigujana attached to it was taken away by a businessman.

Residents associated the sigujana with witchcraft and feared touching or killing the chicken as they feared that bad luck would befall them. The chicken was first spotted on Sunday near a popular carwash about 200 metres away from Matsamo Border Gate.

The businessman, *Jack went to the area where the chicken was eventually caught.

Jack said he caught the chicken because there was nothing to be scared of. He jestingly said the chicken would end up in a pot. However, when he was contacted later, Jack said he had handed over the chicken to a police officer at Ngonini Police Post.

Removed

He said the sigujana was removed from the chicken.

According to Kepekepe Shongwe who operates the carwash, the sigujana was burnt. He said the residents were now happy that the chicken which had kept them in fear was no longer around.

Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed that the chicken was handed over to the police at Ngonini. During previous interviews, traditional healer Beauty Makhabane, who is a member of the Traditional Healers Organisation (THO), said it was not right to touch or harm the chicken. Makhabane said whoever left the chicken may have been practising a self-cleansing ritual to rid himself or herself of ancestral spirits.

Makhanya Makhanya, who is the chairperson of the Witchdoctors Association, also shared a similar view as Makhabane. Makhanya said the chicken may have been left by an inyanga who was troubled by ancestral spirits. Makhanya said such a person would perform a ritual to remove unwanted ancestral spirits.

Makhanya also said the chicken should be left as it was to roam freely. He said it would eventually die or be eaten by animals. Some of the residents, however, wanted the chicken to be removed from the area.
