These objects are often associated with traditional healing or witchcraft. As a result of this unusual sight, residents of Matsamo have been overcame by fear, not knowing what to do next.

Some of the residents reported the chicken to the police to assist in removing or shooting it dead. However, on Tuesday when police officers first arrived at the scene, they did not shoot the chicken. The residents said the police officers engaged in talks among each other on what to do next and then left. They were armed with a long-range rifle but did not use it.

Deployed

Yesterday, more officers were deployed to check on the chicken. *Sandile, who is one of the residents of Matsamo, said they were hoping that the officers would shoot the chicken dead but this did not happen. Instead, the officers, just like their colleagues who had come the previous day, left without taking any action.

However, when the officers left, the residents claimed that this was because they were afraid of touching the chicken.

Sandile said the residents were now contemplating on reporting the matter to the local umphakatsi of Mashobeni North. He said the umphakatsi should take action on the matter.

Other residents of Matsamo were also concerned about the chicken and wanted the officers to remove it. They said whoever left the chicken there had a purpose for it. They complained that the chicken was moving within a specific area. *Jomo, who operates a business around the area, said he was also concerned and wanted to know what should be done to remove the chicken. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed that the police did not kill the chicken. Vilakati said the police were yet to discuss the matter with the local traditional authority concerning the next step to be taken.

The indvuna of Mashobeni North, Jamuluti Matsaba, said he had not yet heard about the chicken. He said no one had reported the concern to the umphakatsi. “I am only hearing about it now,” said Matsaba.
