MANZINI – Commuters travelling to Ngonini were left stranded at the Manzini Bus Rank yesterday, after kombi drivers parked their vehicles to rehabilitate the Dwaleni road.

The commuters, who were seen loitering around where the Manzini – Ngonini kombis park, were abandoned for the better part of the day, after the public transport drivers parked their vehicles to fix the road.

The drivers travelled to Ngonini at 11am to fix the road.

According to a vendor, who was in close contact with the drivers, the road was in a despicable state and the drivers took matters into their own hands to fix it.

Money

“Before they left, they expressed that their vehicles were being damaged due to the bad condition of the road, such that they elected to use their own money to repair it,” the vendor said.

Ngonini kombi marshal Nathi Shongwe said the drivers were frustrated about the condition of the road that they decided to take matters into their own hands and borrow tools to repair it.

Shongwe said although the drivers did not spend money on the project, they were assisted by a good Samaritan who lent them a tractor, which they used to load sand to patch the potholes.

Some of the tools used by the drivers to repair the road included shovels, wheelbarrows and others.

“The road is in a terrible condition and negotiating the potholes delays our clients, who arrive late at their workplaces and other destinations. This is not good business for us, so instead of complaining about the condition of the roads, we decided to be innovative and find a solution,” he said.

He explained that with the help of the good Samaritan and residents of the area, they were able to repair a sizeable portion of the road. This, he said, helped them work efficiently. Shongwe further added that they would return today to continue working on the road.

Several roadways and streets within the Manzini region have been badly affected by the heavy rainfall which has persisted for about two weeks. The streets in the city of Manzini have been heavily eroded, with motorists being forced to park in waterlogged potholes.
