MBABANE – Another liSwati has died in a car crash in South Africa.

The accident took place on the N4 between Trans Orange Road and Rebecca Street in Pretoria West, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The accident claimed three lives of Tshwane Metro Police officers and a liSwati, Xolani Macu, of Machobeni in Nhlangano.

The liSwati was a suspected drink-driver, according to a statement by the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD).

It states that at around 2am, officers spotted a vehicle driving recklessly towards oncoming traffic in the Pretoria Central Business District (CBD).

It further states that the police officers tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver sped off, which was when the officers gave chase and called for backup.

They (officers), according to reports by News 24, were joined by three TMPD officers in another vehicle which was in the area to which the suspect was heading. The vehicle of the three officers who later joined the chase was then involved in a head-on collision with the vehicle they were pursuing.

The three officers are reported to have died on the scene.  The driver of the other vehicle, who is the liSwati, also died on the scene.

It was further stated that the deceased was in the company of a female passenger who was taken to the nearest hospital where she is fighting for her life.

The police report further states that empty and full bottles of alcohol were found in the suspect’s vehicle. A case of culpable homicide has been opened, according to the TMPD statement.

A close relative confirmed the incident. He said they received the news on Sunday through a call from a relative of Macu.

“We are saddened by the incident,” said the family relative. He said they were yet to discuss funeral arrangements as some family members were based in South Africa.
