MBABANE – Not only does government owe suppliers, but even its own workers.

Officers stationed at the Mnjoli Dam alleged that government owes them about E52 364 in housing allowances which have not been paid to them.

The officers are employed under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy.

According to a report tabled by the ministry’s Principal Secretary, Winnie Stewart, at a meeting with the auditor general (AG), it was agreed that the Mnjoli officers housing allowance payment should be performed by the Ministry of Public Service after a request from the line ministry.

The AG according to the report requested that the ministry should provide further proof to support the Mnjoli officer’s request for housing allowances, including clear explanations on why the officers were not given housing allowances. The AG further suggested that the ministry must however, further verify the engagement dates of the officers, when they were deployed to Mnjoli and Lubovane dams.

Engagement

He said they must as well establish when they were stationed back to Mnjoli from Lubovane Dam following the engagement of ESWADE as the service provider at the former dam.

The ministry is further expected to carry out a re-verification of past salary advice slips of the Mnjoli officers to ensure that those who received housing allowances yet they did not deserve them, pay it back.

Stewart stated that she would also request the Ministry of Public Service to also provide the outstanding housing allowance payments that were due to the officers.

On the other, it was also reported that some other officers who were also stationed at the dam had agreed to pay back housing allowances and adjusted rentals for their allocated houses.

The ministry said the total due to government was E62 410.94.

It was also highlighted that some officers were receiving housing allowances and not paying rent and therefore the amount due to government was E16 106.

The Mnjoli officers with allocated houses have had their house rentals adjusted from the minimum E5 to the appropriate house rentals as per the house sizes. Stewart said the officers who were owing government housing allowances and rentals shall start making stipulated in the affidavits.
