MANZINI - Five people, including two brothers, died in a horrific head-on collision, which involved a BMW and a Toyota Vitz.

The horrific accident took place on Monday at around 6:30pm at Talukatini, an area around Croydon. Four of the victims are believed to have died on the spot, while the one passed away while undergoing treatment at a health facility.

Passengers

According to sources close to the matter, the black BMW was from Dvokolwako heading towards Mliba, while the bottle green Toyota Vitz was going the opposite direction. The sources claimed that the BMW had three occupants, being the driver and two passengers while the Toyota Vitz had two people inside.

It is believed that the driver of the BMW was a brother to one of passengers in his vehicle while the third occupant was a friend.

The sources alleged that the BMW overtook another car and attempted to quickly go back to its lane. However, they alleged that the driver of the BMW found that the Toyota Vitz was also overtaking another car, resulting in the head-on collision.

Immediately, they said other road users called the police and personnel from the Eswatini National Fire and Emergency Services as some of the victims were trapped inside the cars. They said the police and personnel from the fire department responded promptly to the call, but found that the occupants of both vehicles were badly injured.

Driver

“The driver of the BMW and his friend, together with the other two occupants of the Toyota Vitz, are believed to have died on the spot,” the sources claimed.

They said the other passenger, who was in the back seat of the BMW, was trapped and the personnel from the fire department had to cut the car in order to retrieve him. They said he was critically injured and was rushed to Dvokolwako Health Centre.

“The four were certified dead upon arrival at the health centre,” the sources said.

Regarding the fifth victim, the sources said the medical practitioners attended to him, but because of the serious injuries he had sustained, they recommended that he had to be transferred to the Mbabane Government Hospital.

Treated

“Unfortunately, he passed away while being treated at the health centre,” the sources said.

Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the accident. She said four people were certified dead upon their arrival at the health facility, while the other victim died while undergoing treatment.

It is worth noting that during the month of November 2018, a white VW Polo veered off the road and rammed into a waiting room along the same public road (Dvokolwako-Mliba) and four people were killed in the process. The victims included an employee of South Africa power utility, Eskom, one Sandile Zulu (31), his younger brother Phinda Zulu (28), who was a student at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology and two friends, Sibusiso Ndwandwe (31) and Ntando Sangweni (21).

Information gathered was that the four men had attended a relative’s lobola ceremony in the area and stayed there until it was late, before the accident.
