MANZINI - In what could be termed as clear cowardice to face the consequences of their crimes, six inmates have escaped from prison.

The six inmates escaped from His Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS) facility in Big Bend, under the Lubombo Region, on Monday at around 8pm. However, one of the inmates was rearrested on the same night, while the five are still at large. The escapees who are still on the run are Fernado Mdlovu (28) of Mozambique, Nkosinathi Nkonyane (34) of Mpolonjeni under Chief Malebo and Solomon Mashaba (29) of Mozambique, but resided in Durban (South Africa). The others are Banele Maphalala (20) of Mkhalamfene under Chief Mshikashika and Sandile Motsa (25) of Khuphuka, under Chief Malamulela. Meanwhile, the rearrested inmate is Phumulani Motsa (34) of Buseleni.

According to a well-placed source within the Correctional facility, there seemed to have been a clear plan among the inmates to escape. If everything had happened according to their plan, the source alleged that there would have been a mass escape of convicts from the Correctional facility.

Hacksaw

The insider said the inmates had been using hacksaw blades to cut the burglar bars on one of their cell’s windows for some days. The source said it was still unknown how the hacksaw blade was smuggled into the inmates’ cell. He said the assumption was that the inmates cut the burglar bars during the day because that was the only time when they could be able to monitor the movements of the Correctional officers. “It could have been impossible for the inmates to cut the burglar bars during the night because they cannot see the movement of the officers and security, in terms of patrol as it is intensified after hours,” the insider said.

He said after successfully cutting the burglar bars, which they finished during the day on Monday, they then waited for the right moment to complete their prisonbreak plan. He said it was around 8pm when the six inmates finally made their way out of their cell and prison premises. The insider pointed out that had it not been for the swift intervention of the Correctional officers, a lot more inmates could have escaped as the window no longer had burglar bars. This publication also gathered that this particular cell was accommodating a total of 46 inmates.
