PIGG’S PEAK – A man was left with injuries after a mob pounced on him for inspiring the belief in a 16-year-old girl that he would rape her.

The man is alleged to have tried to pull off the girl’s leggings whereupon she called for help. She was rescued when a group of people who believed that her attacker wanted to rape her arrived to intervene.  Sizwe Dlamini (27) is said to have attempted to commit the rape at a place known as Ludlawini under Ndzingeni Inkhundla. However, since there was a traditional activity taking place at the girl’s parental homestead, some of the guests attacked Dlamini.

Attempts

His attempts to flee proved futile as throngs of people quickly picked up sticks as well as stones and attacked Dlamini after hearing the girl calling for help. Dlamini was allegedly beaten with the sticks all over his body, including the head, by the mob. He was also whipped several times and one of his fingers sustained severe injuries. It is alleged that after being whipped, police officers were called, but they advised that there was no vehicle at the time for the police to go to the area. This resulted in the uncle to the girl driving Dlamini to the Pigg’s Peak Police Station to lay charges. Dlamini was later taken to the hospital by police officers.

He appeared before court with a bandage covering his head as well as his hand. Dlamini was also wearing bloodstained clothes during his appearance in court. Yesterday, when he appeared before Magistrate Sakhele Hlophe, the matter was briefly adjourned to allow for amendments to the charge sheet. When the matter resumed, Dlamini was advised of his rights and also informed that he could seek legal representation. He, however, opted to conduct his own defence. He also pleaded guilty to the charge under the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence (SODV) Act 15 of 2018. Dlamini was charged with inspiring the belief in the 16-year-old girl that he would rape her.

Though Dlamini had pleaded guilty to the charge, Magistrate Hlophe requested that witnesses should be called to prove commission of the offence. The magistrate said the offence was quite serious and that evidence should be led to prove commission. Dlamini was then remanded back to custody after being granted bail of E2 000.
