MBABANE –  Eswatini is 16 cases away from recording 200 positive cases of COVID-19.

Latest statistics released by the Minister of Health, Lizzie Nkosi, yesterday reflected that to date the total number of confirmed cases was 184. This follows the fact that there were nine positive cases recorded yesterday from a total of 172 results out of which 163 tested negative. A majority of the cases were from the Manzini Region, where seven of them were recorded.
The additional two were recorded in the Hhohho and Lubombo regions. Six of the cases were female and the balance of three were males and they ranged between the ages of 21 and 59.
Six of the cases were reported by the minister to be asymptomatic while the other three displayed mild symptoms. The minister said the Eswatini daily graph was showing an upward trend in new cases.

She stated that factors impacting the trend included the laboratory test result turn-around time, new case finding through contact tracing, screening, swab collection and sample transportation activities at regional and facility levels. She said the effectiveness of all the above mentioned was very vital for producing a trend which was directly proportional to the Eswatini epidemic curve.

“New cases are reported in all the regions and Manzini Region still has the highest number. The population of the regions has a direct relationship with the number of new cases,” she said. The minister said the activities around contact tracing through the Rapid Response Teams (RRT) also had an impact on the case finding in the different regions. She said the Manzini and Hhohho regions had increased the number of the RRTs from two to three. “Screening and specimen collection in healthcare facilities is on the increase and that further increases the case finding in the regions,” said Nkosi.

The ministry once again emphasised on the importance of cooperating with health advice such as washing hands with soap and running water or using a hand sanitiser and to observe hand hygiene always. She said all suspected and confirmed cases of COVID-19 should wear masks as advised by health practitioners and isolate themselves from others.
