MBABANE – A manager of Royal Eswatini Sugar (RES) corporation has been suspended for posting a pornographic video clip in a staff WhatsApp group.
The manager’s identity will not be disclosed for now pending developments around the matter.

Sources close to the matter have revealed that he was served with a letter of suspension on Wednesday, a couple of days after he shared the video.
“It is not clear if the manager did this incidentally or whether it happened through cross- filing,” said a member of the WhatsApp group who is a staffer at RES.
It was gathered that this group has members from various staff ranks, including some of the manager’s subordinates.

Information gathered by Eswatini News is that after the video clip was posted, a lot of members viewed it immediately, something that usually makes it impossible for the sender to withdraw.

“I suppose some of the members alerted the manager privately about the post while in the group some junior officers started complaining,” said a source.
It was said that a female junior officer was among those who registered a concern, saying it was improper for a manager to share such explicit messages with members of staff, especially junior officers.

RES is known as one company that has strict policies regarding conduct related to sexuality in the workplace.
Sexual harassment, as defined by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) is unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature which makes a person feel offended, humiliated and/or intimidated.

‘‘It includes situations where a person is asked to engage in sexual activity as a condition of that person’s employment, as well as situations which create an environment that is hostile, intimidating or humiliating for the recipient.

harassment

“Sexual harassment can involve one or more incidents and actions constituting harassment which  may be physical, verbal and non-verbal,” the ILO states.
RES Group Public Affairs Manager Sifiso Nyembe said: “It is true that an incident has been reported and is under investigation.
‘‘This has resulted in an employee being placed on suspension only to enable the investigation to continue without creating any discomfort to the employee and anyone else involved.”

When further questions were presented to him, he said the company’s comments were unfortunately only limited to confirming the incident and that this was being investigated as part of their established procedures.
Efforts to secure an interview with the affected manager were unsuccessful.
