PIGG’S PEAK – Just before they were handed over to SAWS, the vicious dogs said to have been terrorising Pigg’s Peak residents allegedly attacked a 10-year-old boy and a woman.

The boy is a pupil at one of the schools in the area while the woman works at an Asian owned shop in the town centre.
The duo was bitten on the same day, last Monday, but at different times at a township known as Macembeni.
The boy’s mother confirmed that her son was bitten and that he was receiving treatment to prevent the transmission of rabies, which causes inflammation of the brain in mammals, including humans. She said her son was attacked by the dogs, which bit him below one of the buttocks.

Admitted

The boy is not admitted to a hospital but he was instead allocated days where he is expected to see a doctor for observation and further treatment.
Narrating the ordeal, the boy’s mother said her son was saved by climbing up a fence.
The boy said the dogs attempted to pull down his pair of trousers. She also revealed that he was still getting medical attention. The dogs also tore up the boy’s uniform during the attack.

Yesterday, when the boy was spotted at school, he was wearing tracksuit pants instead of the normal uniform.
Permission was sought from his mother to take a photo of the injury but she said the boy was embarrassed about it because he was bitten near the buttocks.
The woman, who was also bitten by the same dogs, said she was bitten by two of them.

“I tried to take off my shoe so that I could scare them off but it was too late,” she said. She said the dogs bit her on the right leg, making it impossible for her to walk properly. The woman said she would have to get six shots of rabies inoculation and that because of this, she had not been able to go to work.

Working

“This means that I will not get paid because I have not been working,” she said. According to the owner of the dogs, who is also a businessman, the dogs had been handed over to SAWS.

Some of the victims of the dog bites blamed the police for not taking action in the matter, adding that the attacks could sometimes be fatal especially when children were the victims.  Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati said she could not find any records of the latest attacks.

However, she also noted that under normal circumstances, dog bites should be reported to the Veterinary Department under the Ministry of Agriculture so that such dogs can be exterminated if they are found to have rabies.

Noteworthy is that since the beginning of the year, four people have been bitten by the same dogs. This includes a helper who had been working at the teachers’ quarters near Mhlatane High School as well as an employee at the Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital.
