SITEKI – There has been a class boycott in yet another school. Yesterday, Manyovu High School pupils boycotted classes, demanding participation of the school soccer team in a football tournament for local schools.

Manyovu High is a rural school located near St Philips, not very far from Siphofaneni.
It is said last week the school administration indicated that the school soccer team would not participate in the football tournament because there was no available budget.

This extremely disappointed a majority of pupils, especially members of the school soccer team.
A source privy to details of the matter said the pupils resolved to boycott classes after learning that administrators at KaMkhweli High School had given in to demands of pupils in that school.

Participation

Pupils at KaMkhweli High School had boycotted classes last week, demanding participation of the school soccer team in a football tournament.
“Both schools (KaMkhweli and Manyovu) have been invited to participate in the same football tournament. So, after Manyovu pupils heard that their counterparts at KaMkhweli had got what they wanted after boycotting classes, they also resolved to embark on a class boycott,” said a source.

According to the source, Manyovu High School pupils locked the main gate yesterday morning, preventing other pupils and teachers from entering the school.
Police were called to the scene and it was the officers who instructed the pupils to open the school gate, said the source.
Head teacher at Manyovu High, who only identified herself as Mrs Mavimbela, declined to comment on the matter, referring all questions to Lubombo Regional Education Officer (REO) Musa Mthupha.

“I have shared all details of the matter with my superiors. Please call them for comment,” said Mavimbela.
However, Mthupha said he was yet to get full details of the matter from the school administration.
Chief Police Information and Communication Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed that police were called to Manyovu High School yesterday after pupils boycotted classes.

In October last year, rioting pupils at Lonhlupheko Primary School near Siteki pelted the administration offices with stones and further flattened tyres of the head teacher’s vehicle.
The riot was reportedly sparked by the flogging of about 20 pupils in senior classes, who had been accused of disrespecting the school administrator and further violating school rules and regulations.

Police and Education officials were called to the school as the pupils ran amok, demonstrating and chanting slogans.
Earlier, there were riots at Mhubhe and Dvokolwako High Schools.
At Dvokolwako High, pupils pelted police with stones and other makeshift missiles. Dramatic images of the riot were published on the front pages of this newspaper. At Mhubhe, the pupils who led the riots were arrested and charged with several counts.
