THAT CHILD IS MINE - MINISTER ‘MADZE’

MBABANE- “I am the father of the child referred to in the newspaper.”

These were the words of Minister of Sport Culture and Youth Affairs Harries ‘Madze’ Bulunga two days after an article hich claimed that a certain woman had come out to claim that a certain minister was the father of her three-month-old baby was published. Bulunga, who is also an elected Member of Parliament under Mbabane East Constituency, claimed that he had always taken full responsibility of the child since the beginning. Bulunga stated that he would execute his fatherly duties to the best of his ability. “I am the father of the child referred to in the article. This is a private matter that is being dealt with at family level, and I plead for privacy as there is a child involved who needs our protection. I have always taken full responsibility for the child from the beginning and will continue to execute my fatherly duties to the best of my ability. Lastly, I apologise to the nation at large, our families and my colleagues in Cabinet for the way that this issue has played out,” he said in a press statement issued yesterday evening.

However, contrary to what Bulunga is saying, the mother of child, who is a teacher by profession in one of the high schools in the Hhohho Region, alleged that Bulunga failed to maintain the minor. She said this was the sole reason that the issue had even come to the public domain. According to the child’s mother, she tried everything, but in vain, to make sure that the minister contributed towards the maintenance of the child. However, she claimed that her efforts went down the drain. “He has not been taking my calls and not responding to my messages since I was five months pregnant. Even after I delivered the baby, I informed him and I even sent him some of the child’s pictures, but he would not respond,” alleged the child’s mother in a recent interview with our sister publication, Eswatini News.

The teacher went on to state that the communication breakdown between her and Bulunga resulted in her engaging a lawyer. Her lawyer confirmed in an interview with Eswatini News that *Sonto was his client. Interestingly, the minor’s mother revealed that she was aware that Bulunga was married and that they kept their affair a secret until she conceived in 2019.
Sonto stated that she went to Bulunga’s family with the intention of introducing the child; however, she alleged that Bulunga’s family did not give her a proper response pending a discussion with the minister.
