MANZINI – Ekukhanyeni High School, an institution which recently made headlines for the wrong reasons, got fair JC results.

The school, which was once torched by pupils who were protesting over a series of suicides that were committed by their schoolmates, is located under Kukhanyeni Inkhundla, in the Manzini Region.

Died

After this incident, which took place in 2018, more pupils and a teacher died in 2019, something which continued to raise concerns among the pupils and community members.

In the 2019 Junior Certificate (JC) results, the school managed to obtain a 66.20 per cent pass rate and 33.98 per cent failures. Out of 103 pupils who sat for the JC external examination, 68 of them passed and the remaining 35 failed.

According to the JC results, which were released by Minister of Education and Training Lady Mabuza yesterday, there were two Merits, zero First Class and 41 Second Class passes. On the other hand, 24 of the pupils obtained Third Class passes.

Improvement

This showed an improvement from the 2018 JC results, which followed the pupils’ demonstration over four suicides.
This is because during that year, out of 125 pupils, a total of 60 failed.

Among the 65 pupils that passed, no one got a Merit, but three of them passed with a First Class and 36 got Third Class.
The remaining 26 pupils passed with a Third lass.

Efforts of getting Head teacher of the school Lucky Mathunjwa proved futile as his mobile phone was off for the better part of yesterday afternoon.
