MANZINI - South Africa’s EFF has honoured proscribed entity PUDEMO’s long serving president Mario Masuku by pumping in E1 million (US$69 444) into his foundation.

The donation was announced by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema during the South African political party’s second National People’s Assembly (NPA), which was held at Nasrec, Johannesburg over the past weekend.

Masuku, who served as president of the banned political entity, the People’s United Democratic Movement (PUDEMO) for over 22 years, was part of the proscribed party’s delegation that attended the EFF’s NPA.

When addressing the assembly, Malema told the attendees of the gathering to go and check the history of Masuku. He said Masuku, whom he referred to as an elderly man, had been in and out of prison in Eswatini. This is contained in a video clip, which was recorded during the assembly.
“Mario Masuku is a Mandela (Nelson) of Eswatini,” he said.

Harassed

He alleged that Masuku was harassed and even as old as he was now, he was allegedly still a threat to the kingdom. He alleged that this was because when he was released from prison, he would allegedly be re-arrested when attending protest actions.
Furthermore, the EFF leader told the gathering that Masuku had never betrayed the struggle of the people of Eswatini.
Therefore, he said the least they could do for this elderly man (Masuku), was to stand up and support him.

“On that note, the new treasurer informed me that she is going to donate E1 million to your foundation so that you can continue to do the things that you want to do,” the EFF leader said and Masuku, who was seated with incumbent PUDEMO President Mlungisi Makhanya and Secretary General Wandile Dludlu, was seen appreciating the donation by clapping hands. He added that they were supporting him because he had fought for the people of Eswatini.

Support

He said since he was running a foundation and he came to them looking for support, the treasurer said she would ensure that Masuku receive the aforementioned amount of money.
Thereafter, Malema urged Masuku to start the foundation and continue to make an impact in the lives of people.
Meanwhile, Government Press Secretary Percy Simelane said this was an operational matter that did not call for a government position.

He had been asked about government’s stance regarding the donation and if such should be declared for taxation purposes.
Simelane explained that the press office did not handle the issue of taxes.

He referred this publication to Eswatini Revenue Authority (SRA) or the Ministry of Finance because the issue of taxes was an operational matter that did not necessarily call for government’s position. The relevant offices are yet to respond to the issue of tax.
