MANZINI - A Zionist priest who assaulted his pregnant lover with fists, kicks and open hands was sent to the Remand Centre where he spent seven days before he was sentenced yesterday.

The accused, Sebenele Jika Dlamini (36) of Ludzeludze made a court appearance before Magistrate Mthokozisi Dlamini after he was arrested and charged with two offences of contravening the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence (SODV) Act.
The assault incident occurred at Ludzeludze on October 13, 2019.

When Dlamini first made a court appearance over a week ago, he pleaded guilty to both offences.
However, he was sent to the Remand Centre and ordered to spend seven days there so he could reflect on his actions.

When he made a court appearance yesterday, the accused was legally represented by Maqhawe Dlamini who pleaded for leniency on his behalf and further stated that he was a respectable priest from a local Zion church.
Information gathered in court was that the complainant, Nolwazi Ndwandwe, a street vendor had arrived home a bit late on the day of the incident.

Upon arrival, while preparing to cook, she asked for a cooking spice from her lover, however, he got angry and ordered her to leave the house.
“It was when I had asked for Benny as I wanted to cook that an argument ensued. My boyfriend said I should return where I was coming from. He further hurled insults at me. While hurling the insults, he started assaulting me with fists, kicks and open hands and I was rescued by residents who called the police,” Ndwandwe said

After the police had received the report of the alleged unprovoked attack, they went to the scene.
However, they were informed that the accused was not there. When called, Dlamini informed police officers that he was at Nyakeni and would return to Matsapha after two days.
A case was opened and a few days later, the accused handed himself over to the police.

Magistrate Dlamini asked the accused why he had conducted himself in the manner he had, especially since he was a priest.
“What is disturbing is that you are a priest and what makes the matter more serious is that you assaulted a pregnant woman, who is also your lover. The court has noted how such offences have become a headache and further prompted legislators to enact the SODV Act,” the magistrate said.

Magistrate Dlamini further asked the accused if spending a week in custody had made him ponder and reflect on his actions, to which he responded to the positive. The magistrate also warned the accused on the assault incident and stated that the rule was zero tolerance on violence against women.

Wrong

“Your Worship, I did reflect on my actions and realised that committing the offence was wrong. I should have resorted to other means like involving family members or law enforcers,” the offender said.
He was sentenced to eight months imprisonment with a fine option of E1 500 for both.
