KWALUSENI – UNESWA has informed His Majesty the King that Patrice Tlhopane Motsepe’s donated E10 million is under lock and key.

University of Eswatini’s (UNESWA) Vice Chancellor Professor Justice Thwala said the money was put under lock to safeguard it from ‘rats’. EmaSwati understand ‘rats’ to mean unscrupulous people who steal public funds. Emagundvwane (rats) went rampant in the 1980s when these influential people in the corridors of supreme power, who ruled the country after the demise of King Sobhuza II, claimed literal rats ate all the money donated by emaSwati for national projects called Ipeniseli Yemntfwana Fund (Crown Prince Makhosetive Education Fund) and Cyclone Domonia Fund (Infrastructure Rehabilitation Fund).

It later turned out the rats were actually human beings who were mainly members of the Supreme Council of State (Liqoqo).  At yesterday’s 39th Graduation ceremony held at the Kwaluseni Campus of the university, the vice chancellor told the King that Motsepe’s money was safe. Motsepe, a billionaire and esteemed South African businessman, donated the money to the institution during last year’s 38th graduation ceremony. The Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club president and African Rainbow Minerals executive chairman is the university’s product as he graduated in law here. Professor Thwala said the money from the Motsepe Foundation was received in February 2019.

He said it would be used to construct two double storey buildings in Mbabane and Luyengo campuses. He said the university was exploring possibilities to establish public private partnerships (PPPs) to provide accommodation facilities for the over 7 600 students of the institution. Thwala mentioned that they would also build state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities within the institution. He disclosed to the King and chancellor that work would start this month.

King thanked for SODV Act

The vice chancellor also congratulated the king on the enactment of the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Act of 2018. He said the SODV Act would indeed help the country eliminate all forms of abuse, victimisation, harassment and domestic violence, especially on women and children.
