MATSAPHA - Two Eswatini Revenue Authority (SRA) employees were left shocked and traumatised after their vehicles were crushed by a container which had been allegedly hired by Eswatini Railway.

Information gathered is that a truck, from Scarl Transport, drove into the warehouse, situated near SRA Customs offices, to offload consignments belonging to Eswatini Railway clients and upon arrival, the truck separated from the container which was placed adjacent to where the two vehicles had been parked on the day, under carports.

The affected employees, who preferred not to be named, said they were at their workstations when one of their colleagues and a security officer approached and informed them of the incident, that their vehicles, an Opel Astra and a Ford Focus sedan, were involved in an ‘accident’.

“At first I thought they were joking. I stood still and a few minutes later, I realised that they were serious. When I eventually went outside to the car park, I could not believe my eyes. I just froze and later sat down, crying hysterically as my car was trapped right under this huge container. As I sat down, I watched in disbelief as the container continued crushing my car, the only vehicle I had and one that I used during my South African visits when going for classes. I use this car even when going home on a daily basis as I stay past Mahlanya, now what do I do?” the owner of the Opel Astra, which is South African registered, said.

The owner of the Ford Focus sedan said she was still traumatised and could not even go about her duties due to the incident. She added that what worried her the most was how she would get home after work as she stayed at Mpolonjeni, around Mbabane.  “I still cannot believe this has happened to us and to my vehicle.

“The worst part is that the people who are involved in the accident have not even bothered to approach and give us some positive feedback on the matter, we feel neglected, hence the disturbed looks,” the employee said.

Other SRA employees decried thethe fact that there were no safety officers when such containers were placed before offloading goods. They said such officers would make sure the stability of the surface where the container was placed was proper and would not take up all the weight and sink.
The company’s carports and fence were also damaged when the incident occurred.

Surface

“These containers have landing gears and if the surface is not properly constructed, the support structures would easily sink into the ground and they would overturn, just like it has happened,” another employee said.
Some eyewitnesses disclosed that it was a miracle that no life was lost when the incident occurred as employees and security officers usually passed through the car park or stood at the spot.
