NHLANGANO – It was supposed to be a night of fun, where likeminded pleasure-seekers bonded over music played by a resident disc jockey as they glugged down their favourite drinks.

However, the late night fun last Saturday at Emseni Bar, a popular hangout in Nhlangano, ended tragically when two men quarrelled over a woman. The falling out between the two men reportedly escalated into a nasty brawl which spilled out into the streets, before leaving one of the rivals, who was aged 22, dead.
According to some revellers at the bar, which is located in the heart of the squalor of Mathendele location, which is located about 4km to the north of the timber-growing town, the fight erupted a few minutes before midnight on Saturday.

The patrons said both men, who had been enjoying themselves at the bar, apparently had an eye on the same woman. It was alleged that the pair had spent a while trying to outdo each other to win over the affection of the woman who was also in the company of friends.

Eventually, one of the men, who is said to be a regular at the nightspot as well, got angry when he saw the other one openly flirting with the woman. Witnesses said the rivals got into a verbal argument. Then after moments of exchanging verbal threats and insults, the pair left the bar to the parking area where they further confronted each other, leading to both men trading punches.

Shocked revellers, who also exited the bar when the fight broke out, frantically tried to separate the pair.
Staffers at the bar, on the other hand, are also said to have tried to diffuse the situation until the two men sprinted off after one another as they took the fight further down the road.

Several revellers, especially women were seen moving away as the fight escalated, while other brave men are said to have run after the pair in a bid to stop it. But all the efforts by the group of men failed to contain the violence as the duo continued to exchange fierce blows until at around midnight when one of the men was eventually stabbed.

A pocket knife is believed to have been used by the assailant to stab the victim in the neck before he fled the scene afterwards. A motorist who happened to pass around the area at that moment had to wade in past the crowd to assist as the man lay helplessly on the ground, in a pool of blood.
The tragic brawl was confirmed by a member of the bar management, Machawe Shongwe, who, however, said he did not have much details about how the victim got killed.

He recalled that the fight started with two men who argued over a woman while still inside the bar. He said normally under such circumstances, they usually tried to separate the people involved before escorting them out of the business premises.

However, with regard to the Saturday brawl, he said the fighters exited the bar without being thrown out by any of his staff members. Shongwe only recalled hearing one of the revellers shouting, ‘stop it, stop it’ as the fight unfolded.

Throughout the fight, witnesses said, people were trying to calm the fighting duo, with some occasionally yelling, ‘why are you doing this?’
At the time of the interview yesterday morning, Shongwe said he wasn’t sure who among the men was eventually stabbed, even though he confirmed receiving information to the effect that one of them was killed during the skirmish.
