LUDZIDZINI - Talk about a noticeable absentee!

Having wowed the crowds in the past few years with her dance styles whenever she performed her solo dance, it became easy to notice that Princess Sikhanyiso was not part of the thousands of maidens during the main day of the Reed Dance ceremony, which was held at the Ludzidzini Royal Residence yesterday. Besides not being with the rest of the maidens, the Inkhosatana was also not spotted among members of the royal family inside the VIP area or among some of the distinguished guests including Cabinet ministers. It became evident that the princess, who is also the Minister of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT), was not part of the maidens as she did not lead the Ludzidzini maidens in dance as has been the case in previous years.

Announced

Instead, it was Princess Sibahle who was announced as the one who was to lead the maidens from Ludzidzini. The change was also noted during the solo dance (kugiya) as Princess Sibahle was not the last one to perform but it was the leader of Engabezweni maidens, Princess Temaswati who closed the beautiful ceremony in style. In previous years, attendees would wait until the last performer of the solo dance who is the now ICT minister. With her not having joined the maidens yesterday, no one could blame some of the attendees who were heard mumbling that they missed her popular dance styles. Last year, the princess left the attendees yearning for more as she performed almost every popular dance style including the ‘vosho’ which is known to be a favourite among most young people.

She became a spectacle to watch as she also performed other moves including the moonwalk, which was made popular by the late award-winning pop singer, Michael Jackson. During some of her dances, she would bend over backwards and play with her dancing stick and further spice up the dance by doing robot poses much to the appreciation of the crowd. While it was not officially announced that she was taking over, it should be noted that the master of ceremonies, Wendy Hleta referred to Princess Temaswati as the leader of the Imbali. Worth noting is that the princess once took a back seat during the Reed Dance ceremonies as she did not lead the maidens but returned with a bang last year.
