MAHWALALA – A businessman has been added to the statistics of men who now stand accused of killing their partners.

While the nation is still reeling from shock over the killing of women by their partners, yet another woman of Mahwalala has been killed in cold blood. Zanele Manana allegedly died at the hands of her husband, Maswati Simelane. The two were allegedly separated after Simelane left the homestead in 2014 and returned on Sunday. The couple had been married for 13 years, and according to the marriage certificate, Simelane paid seven cows as lobola. Simelane, who was operating businesses under the style-name SD Transport, is reported to have ended the life of his wife by shooting her once with a pistol in the neck. The businessman was running a fleet of kombis and trucks.

Divorce

The incident happened at a time when the couple was embroiled in divorce proceedings, which are still pending in court. According to Busisiwe Manana, who is a sister to the deceased, the couple was in and out of court and divorce proceedings had been instituted. Busisiwe said Simelane filed for divorce after they had exhausted all channels including the traditional settings at umphakatsi level. She said her sister also engaged a lawyer who was assisting her with the case. Narrating the events as they unfolded, the couple’s 18-year-old son *Themba, who spoke in the presence of his aunt, alleged that his father arrived at the homestead at around 9:30pm on Sunday. Themba, who was with his two sisters and mother in the house, said he attended to him and opened the door. According to Themba, Simelane went straight to his mother, who was sitting on one of the couches, and asked her if she was happy that he was renting a place while she occupied his house.

He alleged that his father also said he was tired of the life he was living and further asked what Themba remembered about the day of July 22. Themba said his mother responded that there was nothing she remembered of the day and he reminded her that it was the day they got married. He alleged that his father then opened the door and went outside and asked where his bricks and a certain container he had left were. Themba said they told him that they did not know of those items he was asking about.
